What Causes Anger?

Anger is a strong emotion of displeasure caused by some type of grievance that is either real or perceived to be real by a person. The cognitive behavior theory attributes anger to several factors such as past experiences, behavior learned from others, genetic predispositions, and a lack of problem-solving ability. To put it more simply, anger is caused by a combination of two factors: an irrational perception of reality ("It has to be done my way") and a low frustration point ("It's my way or no way"). Anger is an internal reaction that is perceived to have a external cause. Angry people almost always blame their reactions on some person or some event, but rarely do they realize that the reason they are angry is because of their irrational perception of the world. Angry people have a certain perception and expectation of the world that they live in and when that reality does not meet their expectation of it, then they become angry.

Air Power Tool

It is important to understand that not all anger is unhealthy. Anger is one of our most primitive defense mechanisms that protects and motivates us from being dominated or manipulated by others. It gives us the added strength, courage, and motivation needed to combat injustice done against us or to others that we love. However, if anger is left uncontrolled and free to take over the mind and body at any time, then anger becomes destructive.

Air Power Tool

Why We Need to Control Anger

Just like a person who is under the control of a street drug---a person under the influence of anger cannot rationalize, comprehend, or make good decisions because anger distorts logical reasoning into blind emotion. You become unable to think clearly and your emotions take control of your actions. Physiologically speaking, anger enacts the fight or flight response in our brain, which increases our blood pressure and releases adrenaline into our bloodstream, thereby increasing our strength and pain threshold. Anger makes us think of only two things: (1) Defend, or (2) Attack. Neither of these options facilitates a good negotiation.

Internal Sources of Anger

Our internal sources of anger come from our irrational perceptions of reality. Psychologists have identified four types of thinking that contribute to anger.

1. Emotional reasoning. People who reason emotionally misinterpret normal events and things that other people say as being directly threatening to their needs and goals. People who use emotional reasoning tend to become irritated at something innocent that other people tell them because they perceive it as an attack on themselves. Emotional reasoning can lead to dysfunctional anger in the long run.

2. Low frustration tolerance. All of us at some point have experienced a time where our tolerance for frustration was low. Often stress-related anxiety lowers our tolerance for frustration and we begin to perceive normal things as threats to our well-being or threats to our ego.

3. Unreasonable expectations. When people make demands, they see things as how they should be and not as they really are. This lowers their frustration tolerance because people who have unreasonable expectations expect others to act a certain way, or for uncontrollable events to behave in a predictable manner. When these things do not go their way, then anger, frustration, and eventually depression set in.

4. People-rating. People-rating is an anger-causing type of thinking where the person applies a derogatory label on someone else. By rating someone as a "bitch" or a "bastard," it dehumanizes them and makes it easier for them to become angry at the person.

External Sources Of Anger

There are a hundreds of internal and external events that can make us angry, but given the parameters of a negotiating situation, we can narrow these factors down to four general events.

1. The person makes personal attacks against us. The other side attacks you along with the problem in the form of verbal abuse.

2. The person attacks our ideas. The other side chops down our ideas, opinions, and options.

3. The person threatens our needs. The person threatens to take away a basic need of ours if they do not get their way i.e. "I'll make sure you'll never work in this city again."

4. We get frustrated. Our tolerance level for getting things done might be low or affected by any number of environmental factors in our lives.

Factors That Lower Our Frustration Tolerance

1. Stress / Anxiety. When our stress-level increases, our tolerance for frustration decreases. This is why there are so many domestic disputes and divorces over financial problems.

2. Pain. Physical and emotional pain lowers our frustration tolerance. This is because we are so focused on taking care of our survival needs, that we do not have time for anything or anyone else.

3. Drugs / Alcohol. Drugs and alcohol affect how our brain processes information and can make a person more irritable or bring forward repressed emotions or memories that can trigger anger.

4. Recent irritations. Recent irritations can also be called "having a bad day." It's the little irritations that add up during the course of the day that lower our tolerance for frustration. Recent irritations can be: stepping in a puddle, spilling coffee on your shirt, being late for work, being stuck in a traffic jam, having a flat tire.

Recognizing the Physiological Signs of Anger

By recognizing the physiological signs of anger, we can attune ourselves to know when it is time to take measures to make sure that our level of anger does not get out of control. Here are some symptoms of anger:

1. Unconscious tensing of muscles, especially in the face and neck.

2. Teeth grinding

3. Breathing rate increases dramatically

4. Face turns red and veins start to become visible due to an increase in blood pressure

5. Face turns pale

6. Sweating

7. Feeling hot or cold

8. Shaking in the hands

9. Goosebumps

10. Heart rate increases

11. Adrenaline is released into your system creating a surge of power.

Am I Right to be Angry?

Damn right you are. You have your own perception and expectation of the world that you live in and when the reality that you live in fails to meet your expectations, then yes you have the right to be angry. Afterall, if everyone thought alike, then the world would be a pretty dull place to live. You are going to run into situations that you don't enjoy. You are going to run into people who don't respect your views and ideas. The feeling of anger is totally justified according to your beliefs and so don't repress or deny those feelings.

Having to right to feel angry does not mean that you have the right to lash out in anger by attacking the other person. You can't change the views of other people to conform to your own because, like you, they have their own right to uphold their view of the world. The best thing you can do is recognize your anger and focus it on the problem instead of your counterpart.

Key Points

Being angry or frustrated is just like being under the influence of a drug. It prevents you from rationalizing and thinking logically.

Anger is caused by a combination of an irrational perception of reality and a low frustration point.

Anger is a natural response and you have every right to be angry, but you must learn to keep that anger in check during a negotiation because once you react in any negotiation, then you lose the agreement.

Power Windows Not Working, Off Track - "How To" Car Repair Tips

Power windows not working in a car can be caused by several things. The most common cause is a bad power window's motor, the switch could be faulty or the regulator could be binding or the cable could be off one of the pulleys. Rarely, windows may just be STUCK in the weather stripping (called a run) and need to be freed up and the guides lubricated with silicone spray. As a master auto technician, I've repaired literally hundreds of power windows in nearly all makes of cars over the years. In this how to article I'll let you in on some things to look for when diagnosing power windows not working. Ninety percent of the time, these type of problems can be diagnosed in less than sixty seconds!

Air Power Tool

Stops Working

Air Power Tool

If the glass moves a few inches and stops, then the motor is allowed time to cool down and will again move a few inches; the power motor will need to be replaced. If there is no sound coming from the motor, it may not be getting power or the motor itself may have an open circuit. Checking for power to the window's motor normally requires removing the door panel to access the wiring. After access to the power window wiring is gained, a test light or meter can be used to see if it is getting power and ground. I've learned over the years a short cut that saves the hassle of removing the door panel for testing the motor. Most of the time when checking this problem, just turn the headlights and interior lights on; look for a slight dimming of the interior or dash lights when the power window switch is pushed. If a slight flicker or dimming of the interior lights occur, this indicates that the switch is functional and the motor is bad. Try this with one of the power windows that is working to gauge the affect on the interior lights. If there is no change in the brightness of the interior lights when trying this with the inoperative window, the switch could be bad.

Appears to Be Off track or is Binding

Windows don't normally just go off track (the regulator fails causing it to move out of the normal position). If the window appears to be off track, the regulator has most likely failed. Window regulators either use metal gears (which rarely fail) or they use a cable and plastic pulley design - which commonly fail. If the window has fallen, the regulator will most likely need to be replaced. If the glass is cocked unevenly and is binding, the regulator has most likely came apart. The motor will be heard when pushing the switch in many cases but the window won't work correctly due to the failed regulator.

DIY Tips to Try

Sometimes electric contacts in the window switch can be worn, corroded or dirty. Try pushing the switch with your finger hard and deliberately - if the window starts to work, the switch is the problem and will most likely need to be replaced. After accessing the motor, try tapping on it with an object (like a small wrench or a 3/8" extension) - if it temporarily works, the window motor will need to be replaced.

Is Your Car's Air Filter Clogged?

It's one of the simplest parts on your cars engine but it is often the most overlooked. Your engines air filter serves an important function. It filters out dust, soil and other debris before it can get inside your engine. When this filter gets clogged however it begins to seriously effect your cars performance. A dirt filter will make you use more gas, will cost you power and can cause increased wear on your engine. But how do you tell if it is dirty? Its easy.

Air Power Tool

First you need to locate your air filter box and remove your air filter. On older carbureted cars it will be a circular container in the center of the engine. To open it you will remove one wing nut in the center of the container. If you have a newer car your filter box will be rectangular or square and will be located on one side of your engine compartment. Find the box and then remove the lid by unclipping the quick release clips on the side of the box. If you cannot find your air filter box, consult your manual. After you have removed the lid, pull the air filter out.

Air Power Tool

Now that you have your filter out, it is time to examine it to see if it is clogged. Hold the filter up to a light source and try to look through it. If you can easily see through it, it is still good. You can place the filter back into the box. If you cannot see through it, you need to replace it. You should either put a new one in or put the old one back in until you can buy a replacement. never run your engine with out a filter. You can do quite a bit of permanent damage if you run it without the filter.

That is all there is to it. It shouldn't take more than 5 minutes to check your filter. Its time well spent and can save you hundreds of dollars in fuel bills. So get out there and check your filter. Your engine will thank you.

Solving Air Flow Problems in Your Home

Basic things that the homeowner can check to help air flow:

Air Power Tool

First and foremost, check your furnace filter to see if it is dirty and if so, remove the dirty filter and install a new furnace filter. Plugged furnace filters restrict air flow by creating a pressure drop. Next, walk around your house to see if any cold air returns have anything such as couches, rugs or cabinets obstructing the vent. If anything is obstructing the vent, then remove these obstructions so that the cold air return, which is an air intake, can draw in enough air. Last, but not least, walk around your home to check to see if all supply registers (heat vents that blows out air) are open. All supply registers should be open.

Air Power Tool

A popular homeowner misnomer, is that by shutting off certain vents throughout the house will cause other vents to blow harder. This simply is not true, because CFM (a measurement of air flow, cubic feet per minute) is determined by the pipes diameter and only so much CFM can ever blow out due to the size of the round, regardless if other registers are shut off or not. Shutting down too many supply registers usually causes more harm than good by creating pressurization problems with the overall duct system, that in an extreme case can actually cause your furnace to short cycle on a high limit and hence increases the cost on your utility bill, while working key HVAC components and parts to reduce their life expectancy. Never buy and install heat vent filters either, because these filters really cause pressurization problems too. If there is too much dust blowing out of the vents, then the best thing that you may consider is to have the HVAC system cleaned out thoroughly with the power vacuum/air sweep method in air duct cleaning by an ACCA (Air Conditioning Contractors of America) member company. An average price for a 1 furnace home would cost between 0.00-0.00 to do the job correctly, depending on where you live in the country and depending on the service providers cost to operate. Dirt causes 1/3 of our repair calls in reducing the lifespan of parts and an HVAC system is a circulatory system. So keeping the HVAC system clean will increase the life expectancy of parts, can improve air flow if all of the beer cans and construction debris that obstructs rounds are remove, reduce unpleasant odors that develops in the ducts if present and can improve energy efficiency of the the HVAC system in whole.

Some solutions that an HVAC company or contractor may suggest:

Very often in older homes, air ducts are sized incorrectly due to building departments in the past not emphasizing the importance of properly sized air duct construction and also by the fact that some builders wanted to save a buck to construct his own ductwork, rather than paying a heating and cooling professional to install the ductwork properly. In recent years, many building departments throughout the United States really have zeroed in on enforcing proper duct design, so in most newer homes indoor thermal comfort has improved drastically. Some of the things that your licensed HVAC company or contractor may suggest to you should you live in an older home that has air flow problems to drastically help improve air flow in your home maybe as follows:

- Let me tear out all of your ducts and start over! (That would be sweet, however in many instances that is just not practical due to cost, time and a big mess!)

- I can band aide your homes HVAC system by replacing your old inefficient furnace with an 80% AFUE 2 stage variable speed furnace equipped with the GE ECM motor. The GE ECM motor operates 30-40% more efficiently than a standard conventional multi-speed motor and sustains constant CFM even if your ductwork is undersized and restrictive. What this means is that vents that seem to never blow air with your inefficient old furnace will all of a sudden blow air after the new Rheem furnace equipped with the GE ECM motor is installed. The ECM motor also allows homeowners to qualify for a .00 EPACT tax credit that you can receive when you do your taxes, so even the Federal government wants you to go for it!

- For some reason your home does not have enough return air openings to even allow enough air to enter the duct system at all! We need to build additional return air openings into your ductwork so that we can get additional CFM into the HVAC system so that your AC indoor evaporator coil can stop freezing. Good golly, you're paying more money on cooling not to mention the fact that your AC doesn't even keep your house cold enough! Let's fix that and add some new return air openings so that you can save some money on your utility bill and actually cool down this summer too!

- Let's go ahead and rip out the 4" diameter supply runs and install 6" diameter runs so that we can circulate more air into that sun room!

- You know, your ducts amazingly enough are sized correctly, but all of the air is escaping into unfinished portions of the house, because the construction of the ductwork is very loose. Let's go ahead and seal up every trunk line connection, brace, seam and end cap with mastic duct sealant. By sealing up every duct connection on the entire system we'll see if we can blow those curtains side ways after all! No, just kidding, but the air will come out a touch harder, though as a result in sealing up the ductwork better and you will see a significant reduction in your utility bill because the system will only cycle half as often now.

- You know, for some reason all of your ductwork is sized correctly, but the return leg that is attached to your furnace is severely undersized and is acting like a choke point. Lets rip this leg out and install a bigger one with a greater dimension to let that air through!

- You know, your home builder really got cheap and should have installed 2 separate systems considering that your home is 3600 Sq/ft. Two smaller systems will actually cost you less on the utility bill to operate and will provide greater comfort. Save up some money and lets build that second system in the attic!

- You know, the most cost effective thing that I can think of that will improve your indoor comfort tremendously is to simply just zone your current system so that 3 different thermostats will control 3 different temperatures in your home. Depending on the brand that you select we usually can get this system installed from 00.00-,000.00 depending on how fancy of a system you want to have installed!

- You know that evaporator coil is completely plugged effectively restricting allot of air. The dirt builds up on the inside of the coil where you can't see it too well. Lets go ahead and have a power vacuum/ air washing performed on this coil to truly and effectively clean it. Stay away from those .00 air duct cleaners that want to try and shop vac the coil, because that is just not effective in cleaning a coil correctly at all. We need to air wash all the way through the coil and not just on the surface to effectively restore and clean the coil properly. A power vacuum air duct cleaner will be needed to do the job correctly!

You see some of these band aide jobs will cost just a few hundred dollars, while some solutions may cost several thousands of dollars, but in the end after the corrections are made, your utility bill will probably reduce a bunch and you'll finally have true indoor comfort that you didn't have before. Many HVAC companies and or contractors will give you more than one option to consider as well, so that no matter what you decide to do, some sort of indoor air comfort solution can be achieved to at least improve your comfort situation. The best thing that you can do as a homeowner is to select an ACCA member heating and air conditioning company or contractor to ensure that your comfort specialist has all of the latest and greatest training, tools and professional assistance to best serve you as a customer. In the long term you won't regret it, because you will save some money on the utility bill and you will be much more comfortable in your home as a result.
